Our Parish

St Malachy’s Parish has been at the heart of the local community for many generations. Built to serve the growing Catholic population, the parish has always been more than just a church building. It has been a place where families gather, faith is nurtured and people are supported in everyday life.

From its earliest days, St Malachy’s has placed a strong focus on learning and helping young people grow in their faith. Parish priests have always supported this by teaching about the life of the Church and helping children and families understand vocations – the different ways people can serve God. This includes explaining how someone becomes a priest and what ordination means in the life of the Church.

Religious sisters have also played an important part in parish life. The Presentation Sisters have served the community for many years, supporting the local school and helping children learn about faith, service and religious life. Through their example, pupils were able to learn about the vocation of becoming a sister or nun and the important work that sisters do in schools and communities.

In more recent years, the parish has been supported by the Missionaries of Charity Brothers. Their presence has helped parishioners and pupils understand another form of religious vocation, showing how faith can be lived through prayer, service and care for those who are poor or struggling. By sharing their experiences, they help young people see how people dedicate their lives to helping others.

St Malachy’s also works closely with the Lalley Centre, a community centre based at the parish. The Lalley Centre offers practical help such as food support, advice and community activities for local families. Many parish volunteers help with this work, showing the parish’s commitment to caring for neighbours and supporting those in need.

The parish is also part of the wider work of Caritas in the Diocese of Salford. Through this partnership, St Malachy’s supports projects that help people facing poverty, loneliness or other challenges, while encouraging families and young people to put faith into action.

Today, St Malachy’s continues to be a welcoming and supportive parish community. By working together with priests, religious brothers and sisters, volunteers and organisations like the Lalley Centre and Caritas, the parish continues its mission of faith, learning and service for the people of Collyhurst
