At St Malachy’s, we are committed to providing children with opportunities to learn in the outdoor environment. We believe that taking learning outside promotes self-esteem, wellbeing, positive behaviour, co-operative learning, and problem-solving skills.
Our Forest School leaders deliver engaging sessions within our on-site woodland area, providing children with rich, hands-on learning experiences in a natural environment. Our long-term plan carefully maps out the activities and skills pupils will develop over time. Children have the opportunity to take part in den building, fire lighting, outdoor cooking, and learning about local wildlife, alongside a wide range of other exciting Forest School activities that promote confidence, resilience, and a deeper connection with nature.
Our on-site allotment provides children with hands-on opportunities to sow, nurture, and harvest a variety of plants and vegetables. Once ready, the produce is either used in cooking activities or donated to the Lalley Centre Food Bank, helping children understand the value of sharing and community support. Each day, children also collect food waste from lunchtime and add it to the Riddon composter, where it is transformed into nutrient-rich fertilizer—supporting a sustainable cycle of growing and reuse
St Malachy's Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and we expect everyone who works in and visits our school to share this commitment. For further information, please see the safeguarding information under Policies.
