The Religious Education Curriculum

The Religious Education Curriculum

Religious Education is at the centre of to our school curriculum. The requirements of the RE curriculum are met through the scheme ‘Come and See’ which meets the requirements of the Religious Education Curriculum Directory set out by the Bishop’s Conference of England Wales. At St Malachy’s we adapt the ‘Come and See’ programme to meet the needs of our children. Lessons focus on both providing the children with a knowledge of the Catholic Faith and leading them to a deeper understanding of the significance of religion in their lives. They are encouraged to give a variety of responses to what they have learned and to measure their own development as Christians by reflecting on their relationships with others and with God. Children are encouraged to discuss and debate in a respectful manner their views and the views of others.  All lessons are planned and resourced to be inclusive of all children regardless of any other circumstances. We ensure that families are supported in bringing their children up in the Catholic faith and we provide a well- rounded Catholic education. We support all our staff Catholic and Non-Catholic in guiding the children in their faith.

We along with the Catholic Church, firmly believe the teaching of ‘Other Faiths’ is important for our children. Learning about the religion and cultures of those who do not share the Catholic faith is one of the ways in which we live out the call ‘to love our neighbour’. We have many children who are practicing members of other faiths and we enjoy and celebrate the opportunities we have to learn from them about their religion.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church addresses the search for meaning in life.  God’s initiative in Revelation who comes to meet us and our response of faith. This pattern guides the structure of the programme and informs the process of each topic, opened up through; Explore, Reveal and Respond.

The Come and See scheme is an invitation for everyone to “Come and See”. We are invited to invite others and children are especially welcome. “Let the children come to me.” Children come and see the wonder that is within them and beyond them.

All classes throughout the school are studying the same fundamental topic with a differentiated theme suited to their age. The main themes are: The Church, The Sacraments and Christian Living.

Each class has a dedicated area that reflects the current learning in Religious Education. Here are some photos of displays of work and worship areas around the school:
